What is Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a psychological process of self-awareness, of being in the present and accepting things for what they are. Over the last few decades mindfulness techniques have been adapted for use in a number of therapeutic applications to assist with mood regulation, help to reduce symptoms of depression, reduce stress and anxiety, and in the treatment of addictions.
Mindfulness-based interventions are effective in the reduction of both rumination and worry which we have all experienced at different times in our lives and are contributors to conditions such as depression and anxiety. More broadly, developing a regular mindfulness practice has been shown to improve an individual long term mental well-being and quality of life.
So, how do you get started with a basic mindfulness practice?
Basic Mindfulness Exercises - 5 Minute Guided Meditation
There are several exercises available to help you develop your personal mindfulness practice. Mindfulness meditation is one such technique, and a simple way to start is by using a guided meditation practice. When starting out you may find that it is easier to start with short periods of 5-10 minutes of meditation practice per day. As you practice regularly, it will become easier to keep your attention focused and you will find it easier to conduct longer meditation practices.
The attached 5 minute Mindfulness Guided Meditation video/audio clip provides an easy introduction to mindfulness meditation that will fit into the busiest of schedules. So, why not give it a go, 'take five' and develop a skill to start enhancing your well-being today.
